Hacker
Our apologies at this point to the real internet elite, the
hackers.
Throughout this site and our documentations at numerous places the term 'hacker' is used to refer to what really are
crackers, a distinction that is not known in the business world.
Hackers are keyboard hacking freaks, usually professionals, that know more about the inner structure of Unix, TCP/IP and the Patriotic Act than all heads of your IT department PhD's combined. They usually have very high ethics, and at occasions can be quite dogmatic. They could a lot, that they don't.
Crackers are system cracking criminals that exploit the global IT infrastructure and damage business and private interests for reasons of financial gain or ego enlargement. Even if they are knowledgeable, due to their lacking ethics they cannot be labled hackers.
What's worse is, that much damage done today is due to
Script Kiddies, who are really the opposite of hackers, entirely unknowledgable, irresponsible and without any ethics but their immature ego's well being. That's not even swearing, it's just how it is today.
Sure, these definitions are romantic. Of course people call us at authentic internet hackers, too. But deep in our hearts we know, we don't qualify. We're too business oriented and we don't consume sufficient ammounts of coffee and nicotine.
